Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is the total weight of a packed cargo container, including the cargo, its packaging and the container itself. It is a key requirement in maritime transport to ensure safety, prevent accidents and maintain vessel stability.

Before the VGM regulation was introduced, container weights were often estimated, leading to risks such as incorrect stowage, cargo damage and safety hazards for dock workers.

All packed (FCL) containers must have an accurately declared VGM before they can be loaded onto a vessel, ensuring compliance with international safety regulations.
