📌 Logistics UK Warns Rising Operating Costs Could Increase Consumer Prices

Logistics UK latest Manager’s Guide to Distribution Costs 2026 reports that vehicle operating costs for UK hauliers have increased by more than 12% over the past year, reflecting continued cost pressures across the logistics sector.

The report attributes much of the increase to a 36% rise in diesel prices, alongside a 7% increase in vehicle insurance premiums and an 8% increase in driver employment costs. Ongoing disruption to global shipping routes has also contributed to higher transport costs.

Logistics UK advises that, if these increased operating costs continue to be passed through supply chains, they may contribute to higher costs for businesses and consumers across sectors including retail, food distribution and manufacturing.

📌 Preparing Supply Chains for Sustainability Reporting

UK businesses are entering an important period of preparation as sustainability reporting requirements continue to evolve.

The UK Sustainability Reporting Standards (UK SRS) provide a framework for consistent sustainability disclosures, while regulators continue to develop implementation requirements across different sectors. As reporting expectations increase, larger organisations are expected to seek more detailed emissions data from suppliers and logistics providers to support their own reporting obligations.

Many transport operators are therefore reviewing opportunities to improve fleet efficiency and reduce emissions through measures such as route optimisation technologies, telematics, alternative fuels and phased fleet renewal, where commercially appropriate. Organisations throughout the supply chain may wish to assess how they collect and report environmental data in anticipation of future customer and regulatory requirements.

📌 IBM, KBR and Unipart Launch Team ORION

IBM, KBR and Unipart have announced the formation of Team ORION, a collaboration established to support the modernisation of logistics capabilities within the UK Ministry of Defence.

The consortium combines expertise in logistics, technology and systems integration to deliver digital solutions designed to strengthen defence supply chain resilience and operational effectiveness.

The programme will incorporate predictive analytics, AI-enabled asset tracking and advanced inventory management technologies to improve visibility, planning and decision-making across defence logistics operations. The initiative reflects the increasing role of digital technologies in supporting complex public sector supply chains.
